Our magazine takes its name from an aspect of the Tree of Life as described in kabbalah. According to this tradition, tiferet represents the reconciliation of conflicting inclinations, corresponds to the heart, and reveals itself as truth, beauty, and focused compassion. It is a stable center within the Tree of Life, a place where the physical and spiritual realms meet.
Further, within kabbalah, letters themselves are holy vessels. It is through the alphabet that God makes creation manifest. Similar references appear in most of the world's major religions.
"A good poem is like finding
a hole in the palace wall -
you never know what you might see."
