Kitty Norton posted an update My dearest and oldest friend (of 43 years) gave me a writing assignment - a spiritual autography. It seems daunting to me, and I don't know where to start. So broad. I have a page and a half of ideas, and I've been replaying various conversations, episodes, and situations from my early childhood through my current adulthood. It doesn't seem to me this can be linear at all. This profile photo I've just posted - this lovely, elegant, graceful suspension bridge that crosses the Ohio river between Portsmouth, OH and Kentucky - represents a time of tumultuous emotions. We were in Portsmouth for a memorial service for my mother-in-law who had just died, but the photo was taken early in the morning when we scattered her ashes and those of her middle son, my ex-husband and the father of my 3 children, into the chilly waters of the Ohio River. I felt like I was watching from outside my own body, and I remember only sensations, visual snapshots, and feelings: the damp chill in the air, the tears on my daughter's cheeks, the grittyness of the ashes in the green box, my ashy handprint on the back of my brother-in-law's leather jacket, the feeling that it was the exact right place for Gale's and his mother's remains, the closing of a chapter in our lives. After that moment of closure, after 4 years of not hearing his voice, my spirit still has a hole in it from his absence. For a myriad of reasons we stopped being married, but we never stopped being friends, and I miss my friend, my spiritual partner.
